FAQs-
-
What do usability testers do?
Usability testers evaluate websites, apps, or prototypes by simulating specific user scenarios. Their task might involve actions like finding a product in an online store and going through the checkout process. This helps site owners identify and resolve usability issues.
-
Do testers need to purchase products or services from the websites they test?
No. Testers may be asked to go through the checkout process, but typically the scenario will stop before the final submission. You should never enter real credit card details while performing a test.
-
What equipment do I need to be a tester?
To conduct usability tests, you'll need a Windows or Mac computer, a mobile phone, or a tablet. If you're using a Windows device, ensure it's running Windows 8 or newer. Additionally, your device must have a microphone (either built-in or external). Even a low-cost external microphone will suffice.
-
Should I use my real name and address during tests?
Be careful when you use details other than name like - address, and other sensitive information. Never provide real credit card details, social security numbers, or passwords. If an email is required, consider creating a temporary email specifically for testing purposes.
-
In what language should I speak during tests?
You should speak in the language specified for the test – which at the moment is English. You won't be asked to speak in a language you're not fluent in.
-
What is the qualification test, and why is it required?
The qualification test is a preliminary assessment to ensure testers have a working microphone and can articulate their thoughts while performing tasks. This test determines your initial rating, which influences how often you’ll receive paid testing opportunities. There is no payment for the qualification test.
-
What are screener questions?
Before beginning a test, you might answer a few screener questions to confirm you're the right fit. For example, if the client needs to test a website selling baby strollers, you might be asked if you have small children. Your answers are kept confidential, and honesty is crucial to avoid wasting time for both you and the client.
-
What makes a good usability tester?
A good tester clearly articulates their thoughts as they navigate a website, offering feedback on how they expected things to work. You should provide useful insights into the site’s usability, rather than simply reading aloud what's displayed or offering empty praise. Perform the tasks as outlined in the test scenario and provide thoughtful, constructive feedback.
-
What could prevent me from getting paid for a test?
Payment may be withheld for several reasons, including:
- Failing to complete all tasks.
- Not providing spoken feedback during the test.
- Poor audio quality.
- Background noise during the test.
- Recording the wrong screen.
- Receiving a call during a mobile test.
- Incomplete video uploads.
- Misleading demographic information.
-
What personal data do I need to provide?
When signing up as a tester, you'll provide basic demographic details such as your age, gender, state & city and date of birth. This information helps match you to relevant tests. Your personal details, including your name and email, are never shared with third parties.
-
How much can I earn per month as a tester?
Earnings vary based on your tester rating and the volume of available tests that match your demographic. Some testers may receive multiple tests a day, while others may not receive any for an extended period.
-
When are tests available?
Test notifications are sent when a client places an order. These orders can come at any time, and if you don’t accept the test promptly, it will be assigned to another tester. Not taking tests doesn’t affect your rating.
-
Can I use emulators, keyboards, or other accessories for mobile or tablet tests?
No, unless the test specifically instructs you to do so.
-
What do I need to do during a user test?
During a user test, you’ll follow the instructions provided by our client. It’s crucial that you speak your thoughts aloud as you complete each step. Sharing your thoughts throughout the entire test helps provide valuable feedback on the user experience.
-
What is a user tester rating?
The user tester rating system allows clients to rate the quality of the feedback they receive. This encourages testers to provide helpful, detailed insights, including spoken, written, and webcam feedback. Clients are especially interested in constructive criticism—they want to know where their site can be improved, not just what's working well.
-
What types of sites will I be usability testing?
You’ll be testing a variety of digital products, including websites, prototypes, advertisements, and videos. These can come from small startups or large, well-known corporations. If you have any doubts about the content of a test, feel free to contact us before starting.
-
What do usability tasks typically involve?
Examples of common tasks include:
- Registering for an account, logging in, filling out a profile, and adding a friend.
- Searching for a specific product, like jeans, reviewing the results, and proceeding through checkout (without completing the order).
- Exploring a site and providing feedback on its look, feel, and overall layout.
- Comparing two home pages and explaining which one you prefer and why.
- Evaluating the purchasing or checkout process on two different sites.
- Reacting to advertisements or videos and answering follow-up questions.
-
What kind of questions will I be asked during a test?
You may be asked to give feedback on things like:
- Site navigation and ease of use.
- Overall design, colors, and layout.
- Specific processes such as checkout, login, registration, and search.
- Whether you would use the site again or recommend it to someone else.
- Your recall of specific images or concepts and what you believe they meant.
-
Can I have more than one UserTest Pro account?
No, each tester is allowed only one account. If we detect multiple accounts for the same tester, the duplicates will be removed along with any associated payments. Repeated violations may result in a permanent ban.
-
Can I take tests on my mobile phone or tablet?
Yes, depending on the specific test, you may be asked to use a smartphone (iOS or Android), tablet, or desktop. In some cases, you may need to test on both.
-
What should I do if I encounter technical problems during a test?
If you encounter technical issues, such as problems with your webcam or microphone, another tester may be assigned to the test if you're unable to complete it promptly. To avoid this, ensure your computer and devices are set up correctly before starting.
-
What makes a good tester?
Good usability testers speak as they surf the website/app/prototype. They express their thoughts and can provide useful feedback on how they expect the website to work. Watch the video to see an example of a helpful usability tester. A good tester can provide useful information on a site's usability.
-
We DO NOT want a tester to:
Just read what the site says (the client already knows what's on the site.)
Say everything is OK.
Show off how good they are and how easily and fast they can complete tasks.
Flatter the site. However, if you're really impressed with something, you can say so.
Go beyond the scenario, or not perform the required tasks.
Perform the test like an expert.
-
We NEED the tester to:
Perform the required tasks according to the test scenario.
Speak loudly and clearly into the microphone.
Perform the test in a quiet place.
Continuously explain what they are doing and why.
Say what confuses them, and what attracts their attention.
Propose things that would help them perform the required task.
Provide useful comments.
Thoroughly answer the questions in writing, at the end of the test.
For some people, testing is naturally easy to do; others may need some practice. Watch the video on this page to get a feeling for what kind of feedback we need.
-
Will I get paid for the demo test?
No. This is only a qualification test.
-
When will I receive payments for the tests I complete?
Payments for completed tests are processed weekly, every Friday.
-
How does the star rating system work, and how can I ensure I receive high ratings?
We use a five-star rating system to evaluate testers based on how helpful their feedback is to the test.
-
5 stars indicate that the feedback was extremely helpful, with testers providing honest, thorough insights and completing all tasks while speaking their thoughts clearly.
-
1 star is reserved for instances where feedback was not usable. If a client gives a one-star rating it is because of reasons like
-
Lack of spoken feedback during the test.
-
Poor audio quality.
-
Excessive background noise.
-
Recording an incorrect screen.
-
Interruptions during a mobile test, such as incoming calls (failure to enable Do Not Disturb mode).
-
Incomplete video uploads.
-
Providing inaccurate or misleading demographic information.
-
-
To ensure high ratings, focus on delivering detailed and thoughtful feedback, following all instructions, and speaking clearly throughout the test.
-
-
Is there a fee to join the platform?
No, registration is completely free and there are no fees or hidden charges.
-
Which UPI ID is commonly accepted for the platform?
Any UPI ID can be added to the platform; however, we generally recommend using Google Pay (GPay) and PhonePe, as they are widely accepted and offer a seamless payment experience.
